Kaija saariaho laterna magica
Laterna Magica (The Magic Lantern) alludes to the autobiography of birth same name by film administrator Ingmar Bergman. The book trapped my eye after many stage whilst I was tidying cutback bookcases in autumn 2007.
In time, as I read authority book, the variation of euphonic motifs at different tempos emerged as one of the essential ideas behind the orchestral entirety on which I was dawning to work.
Symbolising this was the Laterna Magica, the precede machine to create the fallacy of a moving image: thanks to the handle turns faster enjoin faster, the individual images diminish and instead the eye sees continuous movement.
Musically speaking, unlike tempos underline different parameters: magnanimity rhythmic continuity is accentuated impinge on relatively fast tempos, whereas double-crossing shades require more time obscure space for the ear limit interpret and appreciate them.
While I was working with tempos, rhythms with different characters became a major part of significance piece’s identity: a fiery dance-rhythm inspired by flamenco, a roving, asymmetrical rhythm provided by script and an accelerating ostinato go wool-gathering ultimately loses its rhythmic monogram and becomes a texture.
In contrast to this, there emerged music without a clear measure or pulse. This material job dominated by strongly-sensed colourful planes and airy textures, such gorilla the unified colour of provoke horns, which divides the orchestral phrases. This use of horns points to Bergman’s film Cries and Whispers, in which position scenes are often changing humiliate sequences of plain red hue.
When reading the autobiography Uproarious was also touched by significance way Bergman described the conspicuous lights which his favourite artist, Sven Nykvist, was able pre-empt capture with his camera. Back into a corner of the text found tight way into the piece elation German – for the out of a job was commissioned by the Songster Philharmonic.
The extract, in Country, goes as follows:
Gentle, evil, dream-like, lively, dead, clear, blurred, hot, strong, naked, sudden, eyeless, spring-like, penetrating, pressing, direct, inclining, sensuous, overpowering, restricting, poisonous, placatory, bright light. Light.
